Fish and Critters

If you’re a pond lover, chances are you’ll love critters, too.  And if you’re a critter lover, chances are you’ll love ponds.  Critters and ponds, you see, go together like peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, love and marriage, and Butch and Sundance.

For others, their fascination started with a pet turtle that required an aquatic habitat in which to survive, or from being infatuated with frogs, toads, and other critters that inhabited the creek near their home.

People love their Koi just as much as they love their dogs, cats, and horses.  The Koi become friends, pals, and even members of the family.  They also play a functional role by eating the surrounding aquatic plants, including the algae, helping to keep everything in balance.  The common goldfish is a close second to the Koi in popularity, and they play a similar functional role in the health of your pond.

If you had the time and were inclined to interview 100 different pond owners, you’d be amazed to learn how many of them developed their interest in water gardening as the result of keeping fish when they were young.

Of course, the critter most often associated with ponds is the colorful and charismatic Koi.  Koi are so people-friendly that, when given the opportunity, will eat right out of your hand.  They not only add color, function, and activity to the pond, they also add personality that only a water gardener can understand.
